Needham Becomes First Frosh To Win Connecticut 6 Player Of The Week

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Guard Derek Needham (Dalton, Ill.) becomes the first freshman to earn the Connecticut 6 Player of the Week after leading the Fairfield University men’s basketball team to a 2-1 week. He also helped the Stags start the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) season with two wins.

Needham started the week with a career-high 26 points, hitting five three-point baskets against Hofstra University. He followed with a 14-point effort in a win over Marist College. The guard ended the week with 20 points in a victory against Saint Peter’s on the road, scoring 18 points in the second half to help turn a halftime deficit into a 13-point win.

Needham shot 43 percent from three-point range during the week, netting 11 baskets from behind the line. He also dished off 17 assists (5.8 apg) against only six turnovers.

The Fairfield University men’s basketball team, under Head Coach Ed Cooley, owns a 6-2 overall record and a 2-0 MAAC mark. The Stags return to action on Wednesday, December 9 when they host the College of the Holy Cross at Alumni Hall.

The Connecticut 6 is comprised of Central Connecticut State University, Fairfield University, University of Hartford, Quinnipiac University, Sacred Heart University, and Yale University.
