Fairfield Posts Win In 2010 Connecticut 6 Opener

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Derek Needham scored a team-high 13 points,
while Colin Nickerson came off the bench to score 11 points as the
Fairfield University men's basketball team posted a 62-45 win over
Sacred Heart University at the Mohegan Sun Arena. The game was part
of the Connecticut 6 Classic, a tripleheader that include six
Division I teams from the state.
Sacred Heart scored the first six points of the game and earned a
six-point advantage just 90 seconds into the contest. Needham
stopped the run with a jumper at the 16:24 mark, a shot that
started a 9-0 Fairfield run that pushed the Stags in front by a 9-6
count with 15:07 remaining in the half. Sam Dulaire ended the
Pioneers scoreless stretch with a jumper which pulled his team to
within one at 9-8.
The Stags turned the tide quickly with a 22-5 run over the next 11
minutes that gave the team a commanding 31-13 lead at the 3:11
mark. The first six baskets scored during that run came from six
different student-athletes. Nickerson ended up scoring six of the
22 points during the run, giving the sophomore eight points in the
first 20 minutes of play.
Fairfield scored the first points of the second half on a lay up by
Yorel Hawkins to regain a 17-point lead. However, Sacred Heart put
together a strong effort over the next six minutes that cut the
Stags lead to eight points at 38-30 with 13 minutes remaining. The
Pioneers remained within eight points with nine minutes left, but a
5-0 spurt by Fairfield enabled it to take a 13-point edge with six
minutes left on the clock. Ryan Olander scored four of those five
points, the last coming on an alley oop dunk that made the score
47-34.
The Stags led by as many as 20 in the second half, hitting the mark
at 59-39 with 1:51 remaining.
Fairfield returns to action on Monday night when it heads to
Rutgers University for a non-conference match up. Game time is
slated for 7:30 pm.
